Rules differ by city. Here is what we see most often.
Level 2 installs need an electrical permit. In Anaheim, the permit requires load calculations showing your service can handle the added load, and a contractor licensed with both the state and the city. Anaheim’s EV charger page.
In Anaheim, online permit applications are limited to chargers that aren’t visible to the public, such as one mounted on a garage wall. Chargers in public view need Planning approval of screening.
The City of Irvine offers a permit-fee holiday for homes built before 1980 and, in eligible neighborhoods, rebates of up to $1,500 for efficient appliances including EV chargers. Irvine’s Drive Electric page.
Always confirm current rules with your city. We work with your electrician and you to get permits squared away.
